Working in the fashion industry at times can be all consuming. Especially at this level where expectations, demands, and workload are high. When you work 10-11 hour days it’s hard not to need to find somewhere to talk about it. So here I am occasionally fashion blogging, but not as a fashion blogger. More like a fashion observer, commenting from my exclusive seat, and by seat I mean standing behind all the v.i.p. guests, somewhere in the shadows working front of house…
Fashion Publicists occupy a unique position within the industry. We’re privy to lots of sensitive information, from collection exclusives and collaborations, to expensive samples and horrible clients there’s always something going on. Don’t get me started on the industry gossip; with an ear to every publication, stylist, and designer we’re well connected and always ready to talk it out over drinks at a swank restaurant on the company. The long hours, fast pace, and insane level of expectation all culminate in a very demanding swirl of…honestly…nonsense. I have a running joke with my co-workers about what can simply just be called “FASHUN”. I normally scream it when everything demanded of us is nonsense, and people are starting to take everything way too seriously, when people get lost in the industry and forget it’s not real life, it’s time to realize it’s just FASHION.
A host of characters fill my world each with special characteristics and personalities. There’s the Fashion Girls, Fashion god Editors, Uber Publicists, Aspiring and Celebrity Stylists, and Bloggers all swirling about in this insane environment blanketed by glamourous samples, and stylized IG photos. We’re living the dream, or rather we hope our filters suggest so at least.
So there’s this chunk of my life that at some point has to be discussed. Especially since more of my time is spent working than doing anything else. Compound this rich world of nonsense with being an educated, semi-woke, morally leaning Black girl and you have quite a unique perspective and voice to speak from. So here’s to me starting a new chapter of conscious observation.
Looking forward to sharing more of my thoughts, perspective, and insights with you soon!
